When she heard that BRIMS might close, Cathy Willoughby, a fourth grade teacher at Cumberland Trace Elementary School, decided to help. Mrs. Willoughby’s class is beginning a letter-writing campaign to local businesses to ask them to help, too. In these letters, the students describe some hands-on experiences with science and some new things that they would like to see at our very own science museum.

In addition, Mrs. Willoughby also started a program called Bucks for BRIMS, in which teachers can make a donation and wear jeans to school. The students liked this idea and began Cents for Science. They may wear a hat to school in exchange for their donation.

Lost River Elementary began fundraising early and has already sent BRIMS over $300 dollars!

Mrs. Willoughby and her students are certainly an inspiration for us, read these excerpts from their letters and maybe they will inspire you, too.

The Bridge Building Competition committee met and finalized the rules and plans for the 2012 contest which will be held Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Stupp Bridge Company. Kenny Lee has created a wonderful stand-alone website that contains all of the contest information, rules, checklists and tip sheets (to be added later by Greg). Check it out at http://brimsbridgebuildingcontest.wikispaces.com/

Bridge building kits are available at BRIMS for $5 apiece to those who only need one or just a few kits. Please call 843-9779 or email brimsbg@gmail.com to make sure someone is at the museum since we don’t have regular open hours at this time.

Thanks to Doug Jenkins for coordinating the committee. Thanks also to Reuben at Stupp Bridge Company and Mike at Scott & Murphy for once again providing the support to continue!

November 30, 2011

This year’s theme is “best beloved children’s books” and we chose the book SNOWFLAKE BENTLEY by Jacqueline Briggs Martin. This biography tells the true story of a Vermont farm boy who was mesmerized by snowflakes. Wilson Bentley was fascinated by the six-sided frozen phenomena, and once he acquired a microscope with a camera, his childhood preoccupation took on a more scientific leaning. Bentley spent his life taking countless exquisite photographs examining the tiny crystals and their delicate, mathematical structures. Any child who has cut a folded-paper snowflake will appreciate Wilson Bentley’s infatuation with the beautiful and intricate designs of snow crystals.

For more information about Snowflake Bentley please visit http://snowflakebentley.com/

The snowflakes created for the BRIMS Christmas Tree are from a book written by Marion Nichols, an artisan at the City Museum in St. Louis. Her pattern books can be purchased thru the City Museum site at www.citymuseum.org

The first document is the instructions for creating 6-sided paper snowflakes and also includes Mrs. Nichols contact information. The second & third documents are a songbird snowflake pattern and a penguin snowflake pattern. Download them and create your own beautiful snowflakes!
